In Italy, trucks weighing over 7.5 metric tons are subject to a general driving ban on certain days. On Sundays, from January to April and from October to December between 08.00 a.m. and 10.00 p.m. and from May to September between 07.00 a.m. and midnight, the circulation of these vehicles is prohibited.

Exceptions
For circulation during the periods subject to driving bans a special permit issued by the prefecture is necessary. This permit has to be applied for at least 10 days in advance. In case of foreign vehicles, the application for a permit can be filed at the prefecture of the border province where the entry into Italian territory takes place either by the transport company or the consignee.
1. Transports of perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables, fresh meat and fish, cut flowers.
2. Transports of live animals for slaughter or coming from abroad.
Vehicles having a special permit must be equipped with green plates (0.5 m width, 0.4 m height) on which the letter "a" measuring 0.2 m is printed in black. The plates must be affixed to each longitudinal side and to the rear of the vehicle, where they are clearly visible.
