Offences against the Italian Highway Code (Codice della Strada) are punishable by fines and penalties. Below please find the most important regulations.

Offences committed on motorways

 
U-turns on motorways or expressways, crossing the medial strip or driving against the flow of traffic in the wrong lane 100 - 520 Euros,
driving ban of at least six months
Driving backward on motorways, inappropriate use of the emergency lane 350 - 1,250 Euros,
driving ban of at least six months

Speeding

The fines imposed for breaking speed limits can be very severe.
 
Exceeding the speed limit by up to 10 km/h 35 - 135 Euros
Exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 km/h and up to 40 km/h 135 - 500 Euros
Exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 km/h from 343 Euros onward, immediate driving ban
Excessive speed under certain circumstances (crossroads, curves, in case of fog, proximity to school, etc.) 65 - 250 Euros
Excessive speed at pedestrian crossings 35 - 125 Euros

In contrast to Germany and Austria, there are no regulations relating to the distance between vehicles in Italy.

Simple cases of illegal parking (e.g. outside city limits or within areas of general parking prohibition) 35 - 125 Euros
Serious offences against parking regulations (e.g. at bus stops, pedestrian crossings, footpaths, bicycle lanes, disabled persons’ parking places, etc. 65 - 250 Euros
Ignoring instructions to stop or any other instructions given by the police 65 - 250 Euros

Mobile phones

It is prohibited to use mobile phones when driving if the vehicle is not provided with an approved hands-free speaking system. Using the mobile phone without a hands-free system when driving is punishable by fines ranging from 30 to 125 Euros (article 173 Codice della Strada).

Drunk-driving (alcohol level of at least 0.5 per mil) 270 - 1,100 Euros,
