In Austria there are three different kinds of road tolls: All cars and trucks with a maximum weight under 3.5 metric tons must carry a toll sticker (vignette) on all motorways and expressways. Trucks with a maximum weight higher than 3.5 metric tons must be equipped with a GO-Box, which is an integral part of a fully electronic system for the evaluation of distance-related tolls. Furthermore, tolls are taken for the use of certain stretches that had already been subject to tolls before the introduction of the toll sticker in 1997.

The payment for the use of the special toll routes can be made either at the respective toll points or in advance by purchasing a video toll card.
Penalties
If the toll is not properly paid, the driver is subject to payment of the sevenfold amount of a single trip. Should the driver fail to pay, penalties ranging from 400 to 4,000 Euros can be imposed by the authorities.
