The German roads are not subject to any general speed limit. However, the German Highway Code (StVO) stipulates limits for built-up areas (marked by respective signs) and for roads with no medians separating lanes of different directions. Certain vehicle types are subject to speed limits. Moreover, the speed can be limited on a case-by-case basis by signposting.
Please note that the Highway Code also contains an article referring to "unsubstantiated low speed" (article 3, paragraph 2).
Signs might also indicate a speed limit on expressways inside city limits, which can even be higher than the usually allowed maximum speed.
Special signage indicates speed limits related to certain times or road conditions (such as wetness). Speed limits drawn onto the lane are only recommended values and as such not binding; in case of doubt always respect the limits indicated by signs.
